There may have been a time where America has felt that our youth were lost. However, thanks to technology, young entrepreneurs emerging, reality television shows showing innovative youth such as Sitcom Valley, and more business and economic values being taught in our classrooms, our next generation of 13-25 year olds are now thinking and acting on topics to help generate a sustainable future.
Working Together With Philanthropist Organizations
America’s youth recognizes the importance of humanitarian issues affecting the world such as war, global warming, famine, and poverty. And fortunately, they are being taught even at an early age about running corporate America. They understand budgets, American spending habits, and what it takes to make a difference.
Instead of ignoring the social issues, they realize they are the key to improving the world, taking it step by step. They are aware that the brands they support also make a grave difference in society. So they are looking forward to working together with philanthropist organizations, particularly interested in giving their business to those brands who value their social and sustainability responsibilities.
Change in Their Shopping Habits
Although our tech savvy youth still believe in getting what they want, such as expensive name brands, they are using technology to find the best deals possible. Through the years, youth are starting to be savvy shoppers by sharing online deals, utilizing coupon efforts, shopping in sale seasons, and finding bargains. They are paying more attention to sites such as eBay, Groupon, Craigslist, and Amazon.
Our Youth Are More Engaged and Socially Aware
Obama’s Climate Action Plan recognized that the youth of America are the ones to make a profound impact on our society, as we know it. He spoke to them directly about reducing carbon pollution, adapting to climate changes, and working on international policies regarding carbon emission reductions. Having leaders, such as the President, address them as future leaders makes a big impact and helps them become more socially aware of our world and problems.
The youth is also more engaged now than ever before due to the impact of social media. Newsworthy content is now delivered in a fashion that matters to them and is easily understood. It is acceptable now for them to care and share information via tweets, pictures on Pinterest, and share Facebook posts. They are also sharing the information about their sustainability efforts, responsibilities, and leadership accomplishments and making it the “in” thing to do. These include starting recycling programs, volunteering at homeless shelters, and forming committees at community centers.
The Youth Sustainability Challenge
The 2012 Youth Sustainability Challenge focused on creating an America Built to Last. This initiative sponsored by the White House, along with other state, federal, and environmental agencies, focused on what the youth of America could do and commit to as far as taking on some of the global challenges. Participants were ages 13-25 and submitted videos of how they could save fuel, provided practical clean energy solutions, and created an outstanding water purification system.
So, the world may not be entirely lost any longer. Our youth may pull off what we have been discussing for decades – how to save our planet. Our youth are more resourceful, aware, and not afraid of taking risks to better their future or our planet. Their sustainability efforts are going to pay off in only a matter of time.
