online tactics for small business marketing

If you’re a small business owner who is new to online marketing, you may be finding it difficult to navigate all of the options available to you. Although Internet marketing is still an evolving concept, you might be surprised to learn that many online marketing tactics actually take their cues from traditional marketing tactics. If you’d like to learn more, here are five marketing tactics that small businesses can use to attract more customers:

1.) Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is an online marketing tactic that can help your business to be found more easily on the web. Essentially, SEO involves a variety of processes that can help to increase the rank of your business’ website in search engine results, and therefore, make it more visible to potential customers.

2.) Social Networks

Social media and social networking has become increasingly popular in the last decade, and many small business owners find that using this technology can increase business. Social media allows customers and fans of specific brands to share their experiences with other users around the world. This allows small business owners to promote new products and services and draw new customers to their sites, all through digital word-of-mouth advertising.

3.) Share Content

Another way to drive consumers to your site is to create content to share on the web. Creating content such as videos, animations, photos, audio and more is a great way to gain the attention of consumers, and if your content is really catchy, it will likely be shared by others, meaning once again, your business gets free advertising online. Keep in mind, however, that the content you create will need to be branded in order to attract attention back to your business.

4.) Be Everywhere at Once

As mentioned, social media has become a huge part of the Internet landscape, so why use only one social media site? Instead, it’s recommended that you set up profiles for your business on as many social media sites as possible in conjunction with your main business website. By claiming as much digital real estate as possible, you will have a chance to reach many more people in many different ways.

5.) Use Advertising Wisely

Just like in the real world, advertising your business online should be done wisely. For instance, in the real world, you wouldn’t want to put up a billboard that advertises your new line of sportswear on a road that no one travels, but you would want to advertise your new line of sportswear on a sports channel on TV. Likewise, in the digital realm, it’s important to partner with an advertising company or service that will target your ads to the people who are more likely to be interested in your products or services. While this may sound difficult, many advertising services today are able to use advanced data collection practices to target ads, and this can mean a huge increase in potential customers for your business.

  1. Nice clean and clear advice! Thanks
Theres lot of advice on the basics out there, some of it is good! (like this!) But when do think is the right time for a business to start to get more serious? Is it a scale thing? Or about earnings? Or something else?

    • Thanks Tony. First, business should always be serious but as for adding more horsepower would be a scale thing in my opinion. Keeping in mind that your business plan is being followed and adjusted accordingly then the earnings will/should scale as well. Unfortunately, my experience is that many have left the marketing out of their plan!

  2. By all means like you mention in point 4: Use social media to market your business! Offer incentives to people who share your page with others. Doing so can lead to hundreds or even thousands of people being sent invitations to your page. This can be done through coupons, free samples or whatever else you may think of. It will make your customer happy to spread the word about your business for you!
